Why is health and safety important when working on film productions?
Health and Safety needs to be strict because otherwise it can affect your members and crew actors. For example, allergies such as nut allergies – if someone in your crew had a nut allergy you couldn’t have nuts on set, in the props department, or in the food. Covid is a health and safety issue in my filming because I will have to make sure that the actors are comfortable working with others as many people have not been outside their own homes. I also have to Make sure everything is clean and sanitised to reduce the risk of Covid.
What are some of the key safety issues relating to film production?
- Electrical devices – you could get electrocution especially if filming in the rain.
- Software – again with using software it can easily break or malfunction.
- Safety of the actors – hand sanitiser, wear masks, keep 2m apart, keep hydrated on set, only working with people in my social bubble
- Food is a risk, if you have like food vans in real-life film sets – especially with meat and things because they can pose a food hygeine risk.
- Equipment like cameras if they topple over.
How did you apply good health and safety practice when making your film?
Risk Assessment , Keeping a safe distance, Self-Isolation, Taking a Covid test beforehand, Being in the same social bubble of people I’m working with, Making sure I tape down any wires to prevent trip hazards.

4.2 Explain why copyright is important in the film industry
What is Copyright?
Ownership of art / property / media. Copyright is a set of laws that protect what people own, for example, Spiderman is an example of a copyrighted character. If someone would try to use Spiderman, they can’t because he’s a copyrighted character owned by Marvel.
Why does copyright law exist?
It exists to stop people from stealing other peoples work. You have to get permission from the owner of song to use it in your film, otherwise they can prosecute you because you have used something they’ve created without a) asking them and b) giving them the correct credit for the copyrighted material.
What kind of work is covered by copyright?
Film, Music, Art, Books, Devices, Intellectual Property, Website, Video games.
What might happen if you were to use copyrighted material in your film?
You get a warning and get fined, and your company can be shut down and you can face a court case around ownership if you are caught. It can be very expensive just for one song so really you should just make your own or pay someone else to do it.
How can you make sure not to infringe copyright law in your film?
Using original sound, garage band instruments etc, use original ideas and write my own script, make sure I’m not copying other people’s characters. One of my characters is a Radioactive Man but that is a character in the Simpsons so I have to give him a different name as I don’t want to steal their idea or character design.
How has copyright law and other IP regulation affected your film production?
It’s stopped me from using music for the montage scene. Initially I wanted to use popular music by an artist I like but unfortunately it would bypass copyright laws.
